Songs for the Signs

It was inevitable that I’d incorporate music into my love for astrology. I always catch astrological references in music even when they aren’t blatantly obvious. It is like a little insider between me and the artist.

While it is fun to find astrological references in music, some of the references are very subjective. Some of the songs are written about a particular sign from the perspective of that signs lover, ex-lover, or even of themselves. Some of the references speak on the sign in general. Geminis and Virgos, in particular, have a lot of songs, whereas it is hard to find songs about Cancers and Leos.

I have created a playlist on Spotify called “Songs for the Signs” that contains songs that are about astrology, include an astrological term in the title, refer to one sign in particular, and so on.

I wanted to highlight a few songs within the playlist to go in depth about the ways in which the artist addresses astrology. I started the playlist with two songs that talk about multiple signs. Beyoncé does a good job of singing them in order, however, the astrological calendar starts with Aries and not Capricorn like she sings. In the song, she gives little descriptions of what the signs would be like or have been like as lovers from her point of view (as a Virgo).

I also wanted to share my thoughts on the song of another Virgo. When listening to Wale’s “Gemini (2 sides)”, he offers his opinion on what Gemini’s are like and what he likes about them. The two sides of the Gemini that Wale is referring to would be the twins that are associated with the Gemini sign (click here for an in-depth analysis and history of the Gemini and other signs). The symbol of the twins is why people associate Geminis with being two-faced. In nicer terms, they have a hot & cold personality. While they carry this connotation, people under the Gemini also carry great traits (which is why they have a lot of songs written about them or by them). They can be extremely creative, spontaneous and fun when making plans, and they have an intellectual wit.

I also found an album from 2018 called “Zodiacs,” by The Deli that works great as background music for while you get assignments done or while doing chores. It’s got a lo-fi hip-hop vibe that is really soothing and fun at the same time. It is definitely something you can vibe to that won’t distract you too much. There’s a song for every sign as well as some extra tracks. Here is the Spotify link if you’d like to take a listen.

To end this week’s blog, I wanted to include some fun categorizations in relation to signs and music. A popular thing on Instagram and Pinterest (originated on tumblr) is assigning songs by particular artists or genres to the signs. These are usually curated by people who are knowledgeable in the traits of each sign and what would apply to them. I selected some that I felt were accurate enough. I also included one I made last year upon the release of Ariana Grande’s album, “Thank You, Next.”
